Yeah, it's because the 3G doesn't support charging with FireWire like the old iPhone did.

There will be an adapter that you can buy so it will charge the 3G:

were you get that? i need one for my alpine CDA 9831..i dont want to dump another 400+ on a new headunit just so that i can play/charge my iphone ..im using a 1st gen iphone as well..

Got mine at a alpine dealer in my local area it was like 125 bucks

TRy changing you cgarger for something that supports both yoour phone nad mp3 player thing.
Its quite cheap nowadays.
