I'm sure you can setup an applescript to backup certain directories, but I'd like to take this further.

Is there anyway to trick os x or itunes into seeing the afp connection as a usb connection and therefore the iphone itself.

I think with some clever scripting this would be possible. Anyone up to the challenge? 2- I need to know how to change the download into the .ipsw file. I thought I read something last night saying to simply delete the .zip off the file name and it would be good. I did that last night and noticed the icon for the file changed to what I would describe a square white lego... lol Well, I ended up deleting that file by accident and now I cannot get any of the downloads to change to the .ipsw's and isn't that what I need to do the 1.1.1 restore through iTunes??

I haven't activate the iPhone. I finally sold my Blackberry and want to play it safe and follow the rules from here on out.

I have run a terminal script allowing me to use everything but:
1) youtub 2) text 3) phone features

As i understand this is called "Faked Activation."

I can run the "glorified" iPod with or without the simcard. I get an invalid SimCard error from time to time. I have a functional ATT sim from my blackberry and the sim that came with the 1.0.2 4gb iPhone.

I have not touched the update button in itunes or updated leopard or tiger since I ran the script.
(I have a couple leopard machines, and my work machine is tiger.)

I do -not- want to do any hacks, third party apps, or tricks from here on out... too squeamish at this point.

Am I safe to update to current?

If not:

Do I need to:
Restore normally through itunes then continue?
"Fix" the baseband?
"Virginalize" the sucker?
"Restore" from 1.0.2 back to 1.0.2 then upgrade?

Or since I did this myself bite the bullet and see what happens after I upgrade?

so i installed BSD subsystem (just a guess at the time) and then it worked..

however, just today, i lost EDGE connection - so i checked my EDGE settings in the preferences.plist file and they were reverted back to the Cingular settings (i am using old Blue ATT, so differet APN settings) - so edited them again - uploaded, rebooted, and they reverted back again...

i have tried like 20 times.. and no matter what - the settings switch back

NO i do NOT have EDGE settings in Network prefereces in the phone (not everyone does) so i can't change it that way (if any one knows how to turn that feature on please tell me) -

but does anyone know why the hell the phone is reverting?!?!?

UPDATE - well after scowering the web - i found that i had to edit three files

preferences.plist, unknowncarrier.plist, and one other that i'm blanking in the system folder -

I'm running 1.1.1 right now and I just got a MacBook and I'm trying to do everything on that now because I despise Windows. Anyway, I looked at the guides for ftp-ing stuff in OS X and it says to use Fugu, so I downloaded that and I'm doing everything it's saying but it won't connect to my phone. It asks for the password and I type in "dottie" and it says it's not right. I remember using WinSCP to do it in Windows and after typing dottie it would ask for like another verification, and the password for that was "alpine." I've tried both and neither one gets into the phone. I'm connecting to port 22, I have the IP address right, the user name is "root", what the hell am I doing wrong? I even downloaded cyberduck and it can't get in either.:mad::mad::mad:

Is there a way to completely wipe and restore the phones firmware, besides itunes? I'm finding that after a restore, if I install Apps again, some info is still on the phone. Like my IM stuff on Apollo, and stuff like that...

Ive followed all the instructions, and everything seemed to be going well until i reached the end part...

I type: "./iPhoneInterface" into Terminal, then it gives me some message about to exit do a full restore blah blah.. So then it goes onto
recovery#
So i type: "cd /System/Library/Lockdown"
But i get "Segmentation fault" So i looked into System/Library, but theres no file or folder called "Lockdown". Just for fun i created a new folder named "Lockdown" to see if it did anything, but shot down once again.

Im running OSX Leopard and my iPhone is on 1.1.2
