I know that the following have been mentioned on the forum. Albeit, they have all been scattered across the forum. In any case, I thought I would try to put all the Application files that you can manually backup into 1 thread. Please feel free to add to the list!

SMS
/var/root/Library/SMS/sms.db

Calendar
/var/root/Library/Calendar/Calendar.sqlitedb

Notes
/var/root/Library/Notes/notes.db

Call History
/var/root/Library/CallHistory/call_history.db

Address Book
/var/root/Library/AddressBook/AddressBook.sqlitedb AND
/var/root/Library/AddressBook/AddressBookImages.sqlitedb

Voicemail (If you are an ATT customer and have visual Voicemail)
/var/root/Library/Voicemail/voicemail.db

*NOTE* - Individual voicemails are stored as 1.amr, 2.amr, etc. If you’ve recorded a custom greeting, it’s stored as Greeting.amr.

Photos
/var/root/Media/DCIM/100Apple
(Photos synced from iPhoto)-> /private/var/root/Media/Photos.

Safari- bookmarks and history files in /var/root/Library/Bookmarks.plist and History.plist

Cookies are stored in /var/root/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist

Now, what we need, is for someone to create a new iPhone app, that with a single click, would copy ALL of those files and store same on our desktop (Mac + PC) so that the chores of digging and copying could be automated.

Any takers on that one?

i dont know if this would work, but i used openssh to wirelessly mount my iphone on my mac desktop and then i copied all the folders and entire contents to a backup folder.

some files nad folders said i didnt have permission, but 98 percent of it all copied ok. hopefully i can restore all those if i need to.

Hmm....I use WinSCP and not wirelessly so I am not sure about the outcome of that. Most people connect via WinSCP Or Ibrickr I believe to accomplish this...Interesting to know if your method works as well cause when I use WinSCP using a direct connection with the USB cable I don't get those errors you mention.

I don't think a straight copy from WinSCP would work, (at least on a Windows machine) because it would not store all the file permissions. When you went to copy back, I think your permissions would be wrong (like executables would not be executable, etc...)

I guess you could set all the files to 0755 ??? or all permissions ....

I guess you could tar the entire device and copy over the tar, but you would need a lot of free space.

OR am I missing something. Can you tar to a remote location, can you map a share on the iPhone to a remote machine? A Windows machine?

Well for WINSCP. I have done a straight copy from WinSCP to my desktop for NOTES, CALENDAR, ADDRESSBOOK and SMS. And then back again without any problem or change of permissions...

Remember, I'm talking about your DATA not the actual App to be backed up here...

I was referring to Quaddy entire backup method. I think the default permissions from WinSCP would be fine for dbs, I more was saying as a 'complete' backup/restore method, copying all the files would probably not work. For example, any 3rd party apps copied from Applications and back again would not (by default) have the right permissions, (at least in Windows). Probably on a Mac or other unix type box the winscp would work since the permissioning system is the same, (but that is a guess, I haven't tried it).

Can anyone post me please a blank notes.db file who is located in var/mobile/library/notes for 1.1.3 or in var/root/library/notes for 1.1.2 and lower...!!! Thanks

Hey Sony311, great tip!!

It worked for me on FW 1.1.2, but when I tried to restore my backup to FW 1.1.4 didn't work... after a little time I discovered that the files need to be in the following path:

/private/var/mobile/Library/... instead of /private/var/root/Library/...

i.e.
AddressBook is into:
/private/var/root/Library/AddressBook
now (1.1.4, and I believe in 1.1.3 too)
/private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook

and through the WinSCP, for example, just drop and copy your backup
For the contact list, you need to reboot your iPhone.

after i put the address book files from phone to my computer, I tried to open them with address book on my mac, it said no cards were added.

why would I want to do this? because I imported contacts from sim to iphone with simport, now I want them to be on my mac too, and after I sync with itunes they don't show up in my macs address book and my macs contacts dont sync to my phone. any ideas?
