Proof of concept video on youtube. Downloading (from inside UK) BBC content i.e not streaming. Then viewing via MxTube. (proxy can be added)

If there are any good bash scripters out there who would like to tidy my code up for public consumption, and there is enough interest i'll make my script available.

Not that this is not a great attempt, because it is....... but I remember when we used to jailbreak running code for 45 mins. A month later we hit a button and counted to 5 and were done.

Whenever this turns into an app I'll be interested in checking it out.

There needs to be more content on iplayer , yeah theres some but not that much tbh.

I find plenty of content on the iplayer site - this is at the moment an experiment born from my own frustration of having to use my pcs to download the iphone content (non drm'd mp4), import to itunes and sync, just to have stuff to watch whilst travelling.

Also I travel abroad frequently - and saw the need to download on the fly, without pulling out a laptop.

With the changes in 2.0, solutions like avplayer have stopped and MxTube is at the moment the only solution that uses the inbuilt video player.

This will probably never be an app only a script as it relies on the work of paul battley to grab the content. I may write a wrapper to the script to only ask for the identifier and whether a proxy should be used making it nearly idiot proof. But as there are so many new iphone users who never experienced the "old-days" - I dont want the hassle of responding to the " I demand a gui brigade".

I have received some interest already - so when i have time i'll tidy things up and release the script. (should really ask MxTubes permission also)

Also I fully support the way the BBC is funded and would happily pay 2x the fee for the QUALITY of their content, just not happy with the restrictions of the iplayer for the license payer.

I agree with you about the restrictions of the license payer etc.

But, before you do anymore, get in touch with the developers of MxTube, i'm sure your aware, but they worked with a hell of allot of other developers to get MxTube to the point it is today. I'm sure they would be more than happy to add this on to MxTube, and if not, you should get in touch with with some devs and make it an app yourself.

you just need to make it as an MxTube add-on and get it on someones repo, or get your own. This is a must have killer app.

Please don't give up on this.

For the moment i'll be keeping it as a script for various reasons.

1. Waiting for the new toolchain and spare time to learn how to make apps.

2. I'm tidying and expanding the script to make it easy to install / run

3. I'm testing a function where a low bandwidth free uk proxy can be used in conjunction with high bandwidth network for faster downloads when abroad (any testers interested ?)

4. This can never be an official app, also by making a gui will release it to too wide a user-base and the BBC would pull the plug.

5. same for MxTube plugin

6. The BBC constantly mess with the auth method - and cracking this is the work of others not me.

If an app like avplayer were to resurface then I would have no need of MXTube for playing the videos.

Am making good progress on the script and will be ready for testing shortly.

i like the way the videos are played back in mxtube, thats one less icon for my homescreen.

It probably wont appear in cydia for the moment as i'm still testing a theory for downloading from abroad.
