every time i try to quiet down some of these CAF files, the new settings dont seem to stick. for instance, i have some Portal sounds in pristine WAV format.

1. i lower the volume in iTunes/QuickTime
2. convert it to AIF (still has the lowered volume that i set it at)
3. change AIF suffix to CAF suffix and then the file is back to being too loud

how can i (on Mac OSX) get these CAF files to be quieter and have it stick. i am basically trying to change my lock/unlock sounds.

Changing it's volume in iTunes doesn't do jack ****. Thats the volume that your computer is playing the file back on. What you want to do is actually edit the file itself. Take the file into garageband and find the volume slider thing. Slide THAT down, and then SAVE the file. Then it should be much quieter. At least I think it will...
