Baseband question

Okay i'm about to upgrade to 2.0.2 using either winpwn or pwnage my question is does this keep the old baseband incase we ever get the ability to unlock? and how do i find out what version baseband i'm running? whats the 2.0 baseband? and what's the 2.0.2 baseband? I know quickpwn will overwrite the baseband so i'm avoiding that at all costs.. if there is a custom ipsw out there for 2.0.2 with baseband hack can someone point me in the right direction....

THanks

If you have a 3G phone, the baseband is irrelevant because it can't be unlocked. If you have a 1st Gen iPhone, Pwnage automatically detects which baseband your phone has and fakebacks that baseband so your phone can be unlocked. Use Pwnage (or WINpwn for Windoze) and don't use QuickPwn.

It can't be unlocked at the moment, but if someone built it then i'm pretty sure someone can break it.. so i just wanna make sure i have the best possible chance of getting it unlocked if and when they do figure out how to hack it... thanks for the reply thou..

If you wish to be able to unlock in the future, each upgrade that you perform needs to be be with a Pwn'd firmware.

where do you find the pwned firmware? in the downloads section of this site? or are those official apple firmwares?

also, every time a new firmware update comes out and you want to pwn it again to get the new firmware, do you lose everything (contacts, games, etc) again and have to restore? or does the firmware update just updates while keeping everything on the phone intact

thanks!

You get the official apple firmware files. Pwnage (or WinPwn) will use them to make a custom firmware, which is the one you restore with. Once the phone is restored, you can restore from backup, or just resync everything. (yes its a chore, but that's the price we pay).

so when you restore from backup, you can to restore all your games as well? what about stuff like high scores and other info that you obtained while playing the game? do those get backed up also?

or do you not really backup games per se, just contacts and other info. and then you re-install the game as a fresh, new install (ie no high scores, etc)

Under 2.0, all programs (purchased from iTunes) are backed up, along with their prefs (hi-scores, etc). So restoring from backup would do this yes. Any programs downloaded via Installer/Cydia will not be backed up nor will their prefs.

so just to make sure i understand everything correctly....

you download the official apple firmware...then pwn it to create a custom ispw...then use that ispw to restore the iphone which jailbreaks it....then you restore all your apps that you backed up earlier

is that right?
