Hi there, can anyone tell me how I actually import a WAV file I have into 'Ringtones' within Itunes.
Itunes wont let me create the file into a ringtone unless it is purchased from the Itunes Store.

Convert your .WAV to an AAC (.M4A) in iTunes, then simply rename the .M4A to .M4R, double click on it, and it will automatically be placed as a ringtune in iTunes.

Thanks for your help. I have tried renameing it as you suggested, but were stumped there. Can you please be spefic about the rename. If I were to rename it, surely that would not change the file type, only the file name???

The file type actually remains the same. iTunes just looks for the extension name. In iTunes, first go to preferences -> advanced -> importing and select "Import using AAC.

Then right-click on the file you want to use as a ringtune, and you'll see "Convert to AAC". Once this is done you'll have two files under the same name, iTunes doesn't delete the original.

Again, right click on the new AAC file that's just been created and select "Show in Finder". Move the file with the extension .M4A to the Desktop. On the desktop, rename that file to .M4R, then double click on it. It will be placed back in iTunes as a ringtune.

I have tried various methods for over an hour to rename the file to .M4R

To reiterate what I've tried:

1/ The WAV file is in my removable memory stick.
2/ I double click on it to open it in Itunes.
3/ Then right click to convert to ACC.
4/ Then right click on the new file and select "Show in Windows Explorer", "Show in Finder does not exist.
5/ At this point it is not ovbious which file in ".M4A", they are all MPEG-4 Audio Files.
6/ So I "move" the file to the desktop.
7/ From there I cant seem to find any way to rename it as a .M4R

This rename is my stumping point. I dont follow what you mean about rename. To rename I would right click and go reaname, but I dont think that is what you mean?
How do I change the file extension to .M4R

Sorry to harp on but ovbiously I need an EXACT description of the method. Thanks for your time,

PS. My Itunes library is actually stored in an external hard drive, this is plugged in throughout the procedure.

Didn't know you had windoze. Your windows explorer must set to hide extensions. You have to change this to show extensions. I don't use windows at home so to get step by steps I'll have to use my work computer.

To show extensions in windows:

Start> My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View> Scroll down and UNCHECK <Hide extensions for known file types> apply

Now when you right click on the file and hit rename it will show the extension i.e. mp3, m4a
Change the m4a to m4r and hit enter. Windows will flash a warning just hit ok. Just that simple...good luck

I haven't been able to use the rename trick. The renamed file keeps importing back to Itunes as a regular song and not in the ringtones folder. I'm using Windows XP with the latest version of Itunes. I read on some other boards that this might be due to some "fixes" implemented on the latest Itunes update. Any truth to this? Has a workaround been figured out?

No need to worry about me anymore. My buddy helped me fix the problem. I needed to delete the original file I converted to aac. Thanks for the string anyway. This site is great!

Thanks again Eurisko. Tell me if you can, is it possible to use the new ringtone I have just created as an new txt message or email alert as well. Ie. Importing it into alert sounds in the iPhone itself?

This is how i create my ringtones

Bring in your song of choice in any mp3, wav or whatever and put it in the music section of itunes

Under playlist i made of a special folder to keep my ringtone projects organized:
Ex: "Ringtones Under-construction" so I do everything there. This way if i mess up anything my original is still in the music folder unharmed for quick grab.

I drag the song from the music folder to the playlist folder.
Once its there, right click on the song and highlight "get info"
Go to options and find the start and stop time of the song you want to use for the ringtone. You can go over 30 seconds but it must be under 40 to sync to the phone.
Once you have the time and are happy hit OK
right click on the song and covert to ACC (important)
When itunes finishes converting it will send the shorter (m4a) version back to the music folder.
I then drag the short song to the desktop of XP
I delete the song from the music folder and my playlist folder since im finished with them.
Right click on the song on the desktop and rename to M4R.
Double click the song and it will open under the ringtones folder and it will put a copy in the itunes ringtones folder.
