Lending a 2G for upgrade eligibility

I upgraded to the 3G phone. If I give a friend my 2G phone who would open a 2G acct with ATT could he then upgrade to the 3G for the lower prices?
Any info appreciated.

No, sadly i dont believe they would give him any more discount. He should just open a 3G account off the bat, then he can get the 199/299 price. If he had a 2G account and went to upgrade, hed probably have to pay the 399/499 price.

I had a 2G account and upgraded to the 3G for 199/299. Old iPhone accounts get the cheap price automatically. So theoretically it should work.

Just get a new account and get it for 199/299. Then (i would) cancel the plan so the phone would cost more because of early termination, but then you can get a prepaid plan. Its cheaper (20 a month for data) and talk differs but i think you come out a head in the long run. See Prepay on the iPhone

Depends if he is with ATT already. If he is already an ATT customer that is not eligable for the upgrade, adding a 2G to his account wont do anything. If he is not with ATT he can just sign up for a new account and get the 199/299 price.

So all folks on original iPhone from back in the day are ALWAYS eligible for the new iPhone at the subsidized price of 199/299. If you are not currently with AT&T, you are eligible for the 199/299 price also.

So, the big question is, if you were CURRENTLY with ATT and NOT eligible, would activating an original iPhone on it NOW put you into the eligibility status?

I've a friend who was forced (dropped his old phone) to get a new phone about two months ago and is in a new contract where ATT subsidized his current nokia phone. So now that the iPhone 3G is out, he's not eligible for the 199/299 pricing. If we connect an original iPhone to his account, will it work?

My buddy tried this last week, and sadly it did not work for him. I know it had worked in the past for other people. Has anyone tried lately to reactivate the 1 gen iphone and get a 3G at a discounted price? I know this had worked in the beginning, was thinking about trying it...

I just ran into this problem, and think I can straighten it out for you. During the initial launch of the 3G anyone with an old iPhone on their account could get the discounted pricing. I personally activated an old iPhone the day after the 3G launched and I was upgrade eligible. I am in the military and wasn't able to get the phone until three weeks later. When I went back they had removed my eligibility. I spent 3 hours talking to countless numbers of AT&T reps trying to figure out what happened. Long story short, having the old iphone only helped during launch. If you activate an old iPhone it will not help. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

My 2 year contact was over in June so I upgraded to a HTC tilt. After I upgraded I heard about the new 3g iphone so I activated my 2g iphone. After I activated my 2g iphone I became eligible for a 3g iphone again for $199 and $299. The eligibility status has been on my account since June. I am thinking of doing the upgrade online now. My only problem is that I use a HTC tilt and 2g iphone with the $20 data and message plan. If I do the 3g upgrade I am force sign up for the $30+ $5 message plan. That’s $15 more monthly.
