TH Touch

Ever since the metoeric rise and eventual win since Chris Moneymaker during the 2003 World Series of Poker, Texas Hold ‘Em has become increasingly more popular. It is no big surprise, then, that users of the iPhone and iPod Touch are clamoring for someone to create a decent Texas Hold ‘Em game that will help them increase their skills, keep themselves occupied when boredom strikes, and, most importantly, is realistic. Well, the makers of Texas Hold ‘Em Touch, or THT, have created such a game.
The Low Down:
When playing THT you, “Player,” are seated with eight, computer-simulated individuals such as “Michael,” Susan,” and “Richard.” Each person starts off with $1,000 and you can bet in increments of $1, $5, $10, $25, and $100. The game is entirely touch-based: swiping up allows you to raise, to check you double-tap the right side, if you want to fold you swipe down, and you swipe to the left to deal out the cards. If you ever need a refresher, tapping the question mark on the lower right-hand side will show you what movements signal which action.
Although there is no “all in” option players can still bet with all the money that they have. Don’t get to overzealous though! If a player loses all of their money they are X-ed out of the table. That means once you’ve lost all your cash you are done. Like a real Hold ‘Em tournament the goal of the game is to be the last man standing.
The Good:
This game is formatted to simulate a real Hold ‘Em Tournament. That means players have their own styles of play – conservative, aggressive, just plain crazy. The computer-simulated players each have their personal styles and it’s up to the player to decipher that play style and use it to his advantage – just like in a real game.
Another plus to THT is that once players go all in and lose they are out of the game for the remaining amount of time. This simple action helps in keeping with the feel of a real, tournament-style game. It’s up to the player to keep himself in the game for as long as possible and to beat as many of the other players as s/he can.
The game-play itself is pretty easy and straight-forward. Swipe up to bet and so on and so forth. It’s easy to memorize and is usually pretty smooth. Players will not have to incessantly tap or swipe the screen to register a move.
The Bad:
Here’s a list of glitches that did not tickle my pickle:
1. The screen will always (or at least that was how it was for me) freeze before you are able to finish the game — You do not know how much this irked me. When you spend 45 minutes of your time on a game you don’t want it to freeze right before the end.
2. There is no “save” option – I will admit, this game is really addicting. I like playing it, but with no “save” option I have to start at the beginning every time I have to step away, which can get a little irritating.
The Low-Down:
THT is fun and it does have a lot of replay value. For those of you out there who like to play Hold ‘Em or simply want to practice then THT is a pretty good deal. The glitches can get your goat once in a while (especially if your goal is to “beat” the game), but if you’re just playing to play and while away the time, then THT might be something you should think about downloading.
