Introduction:

Imagine yourself singing along with your favorite tune, but falling prey to the inevitable humming that comes out of your mouth when you don’t know the lyrics.  Worry no more.  TuneWiki has established itself as the best program for streaming lyrics directly to your iPhone.  Not only that, but its additional features make it the best lyric manager to date.

Features:

Lyrics

Upon opening the application you are presented with an introduction page, and then escorted into the program itself.  Here the interface is very similar to your iPhone’s music interface.  To stream the lyrics of a particular song, simply select it as you would normally.  After a piece is selected the traditional album art view is shown, but this time with lyrics.  Unlike the Apple supported lyric system, TuneWiki goes one step further by presenting the lyrics in synch with the song karaoke style.  That means no more scrolling on the screen to keep up with the music.

Music Maps

“Music Maps” is a feature that lets you discover what songs are being played on different radio stations around the world.  Locations include anywhere from where you are standing, to Paris, Moscow, Beijing, and Bangkok.  Additionally, whenever you see a song being played that you like, TuneWiki displays a “See it on Youtube” link that allows you to listen to the music directly.

Song Lyric Search

Want to find out the lyrics to a song, but you don’t have the file on your iPhone?  Song search allows you to access the TuneWiki database free of restraints.  You can search entire artists, song titles, or both.  TuneWiki will display the lyrics on the screen to be read as a traditional document.  Like the “Music Maps” feature, you are also given a direct link to the song on Youtube.

Top 50 Songs/Artists

This TuneWiki feature lists the top 50 artists and songs accessed on the TuneWiki database.  It operates very closely to the “Song Lyric Search” feature except this time you are directed to a list.  It is a very handy tool to use whenever you don’t remember enough details to search for a song, but know that it is popular enough to be on a top played list.  Once again, feel free to click the “See it on Youtube” link to hear the song.

Negative:

There are very few problems with TuneWiki.  The one worth most notice is the occasional un-syncing of lyrics and song.  However, this is easily remedied through a “re-sync” button.

Additionally, you will find that if you exit the program the music will still play, but it will not respond to music controls outside of TuneWiki.

Lastly, though more of a lacking than a problem is having to be online to use the program.  Future updates should allow a user to download lyrics onto their iPhone for offline use.  Get those suggestion e-mails rolling in!

Conclusion:

TuneWiki is a very solid iPhone application that raises the bar for other apps to follow.  Every feature operated as expected with little to no problems. Minor features, like that of “See it on Youtube”, are very convenient and make the whole program feel that much more complete.

Pros:
Massive lyric database
Direct links to songs on Youtube
Works like iPhone music player
Synched lyrics
Plays in background

Cons:
Must have online connectivity
Occasional sync problems
Double-tapped home controls won’t affect playback
