How to Tether the iPhone 3G

  • While this is a great tip, my opinion is that it can be improved slightly by using SSH instead of 3proxy since SSH has the ability to create a socks proxy and most jailbroken phones already have SSH installed, not to mention added encryption although it is only between the phone and laptop. The trade off is opening an ssh tunnel (which can be very easy by editing ~/.ssh/config) on your laptop vs starting 3Proxy on your iPhone.

    High level is very similar...

Create wifi network with static ip addresses between laptop and phone
Create ssh connection from laptop to phone using -D 7070 (or similar)
Configure laptop to use socks v5 with the server being 127.0.0.1 port 7070

That's it. Now, since windows doesn't have a built in SSH client might not be as friendly as it is on a mac or linux setup but this is how I tether and love it. With my macs I have setup a network location called iphone-tether that has the proxy and ip already configured that I can switch to rather than having to edit the network settings each time.

Just my two cents. Good Luck!

Yes, just google it, I think Nate True did it first. You have to create a ad-hoc connection.

  • Before i start may i say i have not or in any way Tethered my iPhone 3G only jailbroke!

    Ok here goes!

I just come home today to find a letter through the post this morning. I am on o2 3G contract which is supposed to be unlimited data browsing, the letter is as follows :

We've recently tried to call you about your daily UK usage is above normal usage levels we expect to see with this product and you may be in breach of our terms. Web daily is subject to terms of use that stipulate where you may not use your SIM Card, including:

    * in, or conected to, any other device including modems;
    * to allow the continuous straming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or filesharing; or
*in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other customers.

To really maximize your data usage have you considered the Web Bolt On, giving you unlimited browsing through your handset for £7.50 per month.

If your usage continues at this level we may place a bar on your account preventing any further data usage.

So i phoned o2 they passed me over to an iphone representative and she said that it clearly states in the terms and conditions that altho you are on unlimited data browsing, there is a limit to which you may use. And that i am using far too much Gprs data or Edge data and that ive to give other Edge users a share !!? What the hell is this all about ??? I have Wifi at home so i hardly use 3G even ive i wanted too i couldnt as i dont recieve as good at home. If any one could shed some light please do so, cos im at my wits end here and now im scared to pick up my phone.

  • Great tutorial on how to tether the iphone 3g! Thanks.

I have a USB Key HSUPA/HSDPA internet key (3.6 mbps) that I use to get internet connection on my powerbook when I am traveling. Is it possible to create a mac to iphone network so that my iphone gets the connection from the mac wireless? I guess it's a reverse process you just described (on my iphone 3g european contract I have a max of 1gb allowed per month)
Pls let me know if it's possible

    Ciao
