Same thing is happening when I plug in my iphone headphones. And funny you mentioned that about the screen as I didn't notice it before, but the screen does not go black, it still shows the phone...

works on 1.1.4 for me... it doesn't actually install an app... just go to notes or even sms and where lower left corner of the keyboard in there should be a symbol that kind of looks like an @ sign,...
