At first glance, the Sinewave native app for the iphone\ ipod touch may seem like a simple, standard issue audio oscillator. Upon closer inspection, one realizes it is a simple audio oscillator. Though this may be rather disappointing to the 3rd party app connoisseur, it is a joyous moment for one with a musical spirit. Though often not associated with the word “instrument,” an audio oscillator produces a simple tone, and allows you to change the frequency (otherwise known as pitch) of a sound wave. This app does not attempt to elaborate on this simple idea, but that is no flaw of design.

The graphic interface is basic, but justly so. Three sliders allow you to control the frequency (pitch), pan, and amplitude (volume) of the tone produced. At the base of the screen, the app sports a large button that shows “Play” when no tone is made, and “Stop” when one is. Move your finger across the frequency slider and you will hear the pitch modulate. Wiggling your finger on the slider adds a nice vibrato to the tone, not unlike the string of a violin. The produced sound is similar to that made by the Theremin and Electro-Theremin instruments of Beach Boys fame. Though it might not be the coolest instrument simulator available, whether you are rocking out to Good Vibrations or annoying your friends with a high frequency note, you will have fun with this simple app.

You can easily download this app in installer, so long as you have the ModMyI source : http://modmyi.com/installer.xml or the source of the designer, Masayuki Akamatsu: http://akamatsu.org/repo.xml. For more information, you can visit Akamatsu’s site at http://www.iamas.ac.jp/~aka/iphone/.
