You have to be able to program to do so. If you dont know anything about programming you wont be able too.....and there is no "short" guide.

I, for example....know nothing about programming

Well, it would start with a basic understanding of how to develop for Mac OSX, which is what the Iphone OS is based on.

Apple's site has alot of developers tools you can check out.
