This is how you make ringtones over 40 seconds in length.

First off, use your favorite mp3 editor to edit your file down to 60 seconds. It can be over 60 if you wish, but the iphone will just cut it off after 60 seconds, won't play beyond it.

Secondly, open your .mp3 (or in the case of mac users who use Quicktime to edit .mov) in itunes. Convert your file to AAC format.

Next, right click your new AAC format file and click reveal in finder (i assume in Windows it will say reveal in explorer). This will show you where your file is located. Next, rename your file from .m4a to .m4r.

Now most tutorials end here. If you want to open it in itunes, it will not work, since it is not 40 seconds. But if you have OpenSSH installed on your iphone through cydia. Open an SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) Program (I use Cyberduck for mac). Connect to your iphone's IP address with username "root" and password "alpine". Now find the folder /Library/Ringtones and copy your new .m4r into this folder.

Now go to your ringtone settings and you will find your new ringtone located under "Standard" ringtones, not "Custom" ringtones. Again, if you used a song longer than 60 seconds, it will still play the song, but will just cut it off after 60 seconds. So no use in using longer files, as its just a waist of space. But this method still allows you 20 more seconds of leeway versus the 40 second method.
