replacing sms caf's in 2.0?

Does the .caf replacement technique not work in 2.0?
For some reason I cannot get my custom sms .caf sounds to play. When i click on the replaced sound (Electronic, aka sms-received6.caf) in Settings/Sounds there is no sound. I don't understand because I have replaced sms sounds in the past this way .

below are the steps I am taking..

1. converting audio to aac in iTunes.
2. renaming .m4a to .caf
3. replacing "sms-received6.caf" in system/library/audio/uisounds via ssh
4. rebooting iphone.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure why this isn't working for you. I've replaced several of my UISounds with the old method (although I think I converted them to AIFF in QuickTime then made them .caf). Perhaps it's a permissions issue?

You have to convert them to AIFF in iTunes and not to AAC (thats only for ringtones). Try it, they will work.

How do you convert to AIFF in iTunes?

edit: nevermind, i figured it out.
in iTunes you have to enable it in itunes/preferences/advanced/importing and change "import using" to "AIFF encoder".

Great that fixed the problem, thank you!
