I was a little confused at first too. In Cydia you need to download and install WinterBoard. And download themes meant to work with Winterboard. Summerboard is for users still on old jailbroken iPhones with firmware 1.1.4 and lower. I believe new themes for witerboard will show up in time. AS you download Winterboard ellements like Docks and Battery and themes etc they will be added to the list in Winterbard. Just select the ones you want and a tick will appear. Press Home Button and the changes will be made.

Thats it. Chris

Other useful apps are Customize and WbApp which lets you view themes before instalation. Customize was made to work with older firmware.

you can also install themes via SSH if you download them from a website like MMI.

One additional note about WinterBoard stuff.. The order they are listed inside of WinterBoard is important. If two selected items change the same element, their position in the WinterBoard list seems to determine which one is active. I installed the transparent icon text and it wasnt working at first. I had to drag it above my theme to get it to apply properly.

You can change the order by clicking on the set of bars at the right-hand edge of the line the item you want to move is on and then dragging it to where you want it in the list.

that's how I usually do it. So far I've only changed icons though...

I'm feeling like changing the dock and the battery soon too!

How to SFTP Winterboard themes 2.0

1. install OpenSSH
(from list of apps available from Cydia)

2. install winterboard
(from list of apps available from Cydia)

3. Get a SFTP program to SSH to your iphone from your computer
(MAC FuGu--Wiki Guide / PC WinSCP--Wiki Guide)

4. SFTP settings: Server will be your IP address of your iphone, User = root, password = dottie or alpine.
(get your iphones IP address from Settings->Wifi->click the arrow next to the wifi network you are connected to. you'll then see your IP address)

5. Winterboard themes go in /Library/Themes/ , this is the directory you'll place your themes. each theme should have it's own folder.

Hello,

I'm also having a problem with figuring this all out. I tried searching all over and there really is no good sticky or tut to help. I found some info but it was old for the 1st gen phone.

You mentioned that each theme needs to go into its own folder...do we have to manually create and move the theme into its folder or is it created on its own when it downloaded? And when you have a few different themes how do you switch from one to another?

Thanks in advance,
Jo

wow modding an iphone is not an easy task!!!!

I have a themes folder I created, I put 2 different themes into it, but none of them show up when I click on the "winterboard" icon on my iphone. any idea on what I'm doing wrong?

I downloaded two different themes from modmyifone.com so I'm assuming there isn't anything wrong with them

After installing winterboard restart your iPhone.
SSh themes to /Library/themes
Open winterboard check the theme you want to use.
Hit the home button. give it a few second and it should kick you to the lock screen
Unlock and enjoy your new theme

Hi guys, I'm a total noob (period) lol, and thinking about JBing my Japanese 3G to check out the startrek mod ( yeah I know, couldn't sound any geeker, lol). AND shoot so vids too... But I'm reading so many cries for help after pwnage, and being the noobest lifeform around here, I'm thinking that if somebody has to **** it up to keep the failure ratio up, it's gonna be me... What is safe and what is not among JB stuff and mods? Thx

roadster lambo:
Your problem is stemming from the fact that there are, in fact, TWO library folders.

When you boot up WinSCP, you most likely will see Library with folders like "Address book" and "Keyboard"

Look left of all that to the filing system pane, and double click "/ <root>"
Click the + sign by it now, and you'll see ALOT more folders.

One of the subfolders of "/ <root>" is Library, and THIS is the Library folder you want.

It puzzled me to hell as well, until I got fed up and repeatedly clicked the "Up One Level" icon. And then I saw all those other folders I didn't before, heh.

Albior:
I just jailbroke my phone yesterday (I'm a complete noob too) and it's actually pretty easy.
Just MAKE SURE to back up your iPhone via iTunes before jailbreaking it.
Once you do jailbreak it, one of the first things you want to do is go to Cydia and download these 3 apps:
Open SSh
Customize
Winterboard

Winterboard is essentially the plug and play theme program, so you can implement all these slick looking themes you find here, and you can download complete themes via Cydia as well.

Customize is more of the 'frankenstein' theme method, where you can mix and match the smallest elements.

and then Open SSh, all I know about that is that it's important hahaha.

At risk of opening myself up to eternal wrath and damnation.

Just got the new iphone 3G today.

Want to modify the thing. Are you guys doing the downloading/work on your iphone or mac/pc then somehow transferring it?

Do I need to find a way into the iphone to manipulate folders?

Thanks folks.

Dim worm!
