AT&T (no data plan) question

Okay. I have a contract with AT&T and I just bought an unlocked iPhone. However, I do not have a data plan because I did not use it so I canceled it. Is it alright for me to put my sim card into the iPhone and use it without having to worry about other monthly charges from AT&T for using the iPhone? Again I do not have a data plan at all and I would only be able to use wi-fi, right? Thanks.

The one thing I would be cautious of is that there are quite a bit of things on the iPhone that you may hit not thinking about it and get charged data charges (ie weather, stocks, you tube etc). I would just bite the bullet and get an unlimited package. You'll be surprised how often you use those things with out even thinking about it.

I was thinking about getting the unlimited package. The one thing I am not too sure about is that when I was using my old phone I could not connect to EDGE at all. I'm pretty sure that I have no data package at all and it has been blocked. And when I was using the iPhone for a couple of days I could not connect (safari, youtube, weather, etc.) at all outside of my wi-fi connection. Would it be safe if I just downloaded services and turn off EDGE even though I am pretty sure that EDGE does not work for me? Thank you for all the help.

Get the services app and turn off Edge, although you're probably right that if ATT has your data turned off you're okay and they can't charge you for usage.

Another thing you'll miss out on though without the data plan is visual voicemail. Just thought i'd throw that out there.

I turn off Edge on mine but it keeps coming back every time it locks or is turned off. I have to remember to turn edge off, even if I only want to use wifi.

Is there any way to turn off edge and keep it off by default? The services app and Boss preferences both seem to have only temporary effect.

i think you have to have bsd subsystem installed for it to stay off.
