Major Restrictions with the new apple SDK!

Very bad news. Apple has put some major restrictions on apps that if you don't follow they wont approve. there where take from the iPhones Human Interface Guidelines Doc

"Only one iPhone application can run at a time, and third-party applications never run in the background. This means that when users switch to another application, answer the phone, or check their email, the application they were using quits. (p. 16)" WTF

"An Application may write data on a device only to the Application's designated container area, except as otherwise specified by Apple."

"Applications may only use Published APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any unpublished or private APIs."

"Applications must comply with the Human Interface Guidelines and other Documentation provided by Apple."

The full iPhones Human Interface Guidelines Doc can be view at the bottom of this page

jailbrake ftw then? (sorry to use an acronym but hey..)
Seems quite restrictive to me, although I am not in the slightest bit a developer, but if Apple are going to be a nanny between programs and our iPhones, I will happily keep on donating to ziphone, installer.app and the programs that come through that instead.

Sticking with Jailbreak! Screw apple and their ways of restrictions. I knew it was to good to be true about the SDK.

Exactly Pingwhen! I'm totally cool being on the bmarket if they are going to be so booty. They weren't even going to allow apps at first. Jobs is a control freak. Just get the word out about the Jailbreak method and he will totally relinquish his power to us!

What i hate the most is the
"Only one iPhone application can run at a time, and third-party applications never run in the background.

They should at least allow 1 app background incase some idiot call me while im having a good time with some apps or probably while im writing a long sms.

Apple made it this way for memory/resource management. Looking at Windows Mobile apps, the official ones OTB works fine while running in the back. But once third-party apps starts loading up leaving barely any resources for the phone itself, it becomes extremely slow. And who gets the blame? Microsoft. Apple doesn't want any of that.

I don't blame them.

Besides, most apps save their current state when quitting. SMSs are saved mid sentence when a call comes in.

I don't know if I'd call these "major" restrictions...at least, not for typical apps.

Most of the apps I'd be hoping for this puts a big damper on.

No Backgrounding:
IM/Chat applications
RSS readers
MobileScrobbler (which imo is the best app developed for the iphone right now)
A "Facebook" or "MySpace" app that notifies when new messages or wall postings are made.

Though really -- I think it's going to be a case where big companies get their way with Apple's permission and the independent developer gets screwed until their app (sans abilities) makes it to a best-selling app. That AIM app demoed would suck if it wasn't allowed to background. I doubt that Apple wants to flagship an IM client that disconnects as soon as you switch windows - I think many users would be dissatisfied with that, and it wouldn't make a very good case for how wonderfully apps on the iPhone perform.

There is an inherent issue with network connectivity through EDGE and incoming calls (you can't be connected to EDGE and making or receiving phone calls - an incoming call boots you off the data connection). But not allowing any backgrounding at all is just plain mean. There's going to HAVE to be exceptions to this rule.

Funny, when my phone rings my ipod mutes and the phone comes on. When I hang up the ipod unmutes. Sounds like they aren't against apps running on top of other apps, just YOU making them run on top of other apps.
