GTech for the iPhone it's here!

iPhone app: GTech measures speed (Km/h, mph), acceleration (0-100Km) etc
Check it out here it is in greek:

This is the source: http://promentor.no/demo.
You have to have Jiggy Runtime installed first.
I have not tried it yet. Here it is plus screenshots. Enjoy

Yo man I just found it, and passing it along. I do not speak greek. GTech is normaly a device for cars to measure acceleration and g-forces. And this is a app for the phone using the built in accelerometer.

i do..

GTech is an app made by irafaS that can measure speed (Km/h mph) but as well acceleration ( 0 - 100Km) of a moving vehicle and give direct results to the iphone screen.

This is made using iPhone's accelerometer

In order to install GTech:

Add this source to Installer: http://promentor.no/demo.
*(Jiggy Runtime from Devolopment category should be installed first)

I will try it tomorrow. There is also an app called GForce, will try that too.

It is theoretically possible.

Using the accelerometer, you can measure acceleration if the iphone is horizontal (maybe in any orientation if you go straight for the low-level stuff). Then, you just integrate acceleration to get speed.

I doubt it'll measure the speed at which, for example, a car is moving when the iphone is in the car. However, it'll measure the speed of how fast you can move the iphone in your hand (i.e. waive it left to right). It converts an acceleration into "speed", but the acceleration is just of the device. Even if you mounted it on the hood of your car, i'm not sure it'll give you any acurate speed. Though, this is just my opinion based on what an accelerometer is. I have not tried it myself.

Since the sensor isn't able to distinct which direction the acceleration has got, it's impossible to make it realise that you actually getting slower and not faster when braking.
All those attempts to use this accelerometer as a speed measurement tool are bound to fail, sorry guys. It's just measuring the acceleration that is also known as gravity, to tell the device where it is facing to. It's impossible to register any movement other than tilting or dropping/lifting.

That's not at all true. G forces come in both positive and negative dimensions. By measuring the change, you can determine both acceleration and deceleration.

I've used an accelerometer-based datalogger for cars before, they work on exactly the same principle as this software.
