Native Application to post journal entries to the LiveJournal website (http://www.livejournal.com)

LiveJournal is a native journal entry application. Overall, it’s a fairly simple app, however its power lies not in the interface itself, but in its associated website online.

When you first load the application, it will advise you to enter your LiveJournal login ID and password. If you don’t already have one, head over to the LiveJournal website and sign up for free. Once you enter these details, the application will present you with the Settings page. Here you can define things like default tags, auto formatting, and a variety of defaults. Version 0.2.0 provides additional settings that are not yet active. These include detect music and location, personal FTP, and PIN Security.

As far as Journaling goes, this is a very good application that serves its purpose well. The only down-side is that it requires an active connection to post entries, which can be a problem for touch users. Also, the app does not provide the ability to list nor edit existing entries, it appears to be an ‘Add Only’ app. The ability to manage previous entries would be a nice touch, as would the ability to add entries locally, for later upload when a connection becomes available.

The website itself is very well done, making this app a mere extension of a much broader journaling interface available at http://livejournal.com. If not for this larger, better interface, this application would have received a much poorer review.

On the whole, LiveJournal 0.2.0 is clearly a work in progress, but remains a very solid entry into the journaling realm for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It’s definitely worthy of installation, especially if you’re presently using ‘Notes’ to keep tabs on your journal entries.
