    ILibertyX

We get alot of questions about how exactly to Jailbreak, Unlock, or both using iLiberty+. This guide is intended to outline the exact steps required to successfully perform this process using iLiberty+ for Windows. Before we begin, there's a few words of caution. Restoring your iPhone will result in the loss of all data. Now that we have that bit of trivia out of the way, let's begin.

1.) Backups. The first step is to backup whatever you want saved. This is done a number of ways, TimeCapsule, or similar apps can make backups of specific application data, while using the OpenSSH feature can allow you to physically pull files from the iPhone for storage elsewhere. Whatever your method, backing up data is critical. If you're unsure of how to do this, Google is your friend.

2.) Restore. Before you can begin to use iLiberty+, you must restore. This is done via iTunes.

At the time of this writing, 1.1.4 is the most current firmware version available from iTunes, so there's no need to manually download it from another source. 2.0 is quickly approaching however, and the moment that's released, you'll need to find the 1.1.4 firmware pretty quickly. Thankfully, we can help you with that. You can access the ModMyifone Firmware Downloads page to obtain your ideal firmware version.

Note that at this time, 2.0 is not jailbreakable, or unlockable. This is sure to change in time.

Once you have obtained your firmware, or not, you'll want to place your iPhone into what's called DFU (Default Factory Update) mode. This mode allows for a 'deeper' restore of the iPhone. To place your iPhone into DFU mode:

    a. Turn the iPhone ON

    b. CONNECT it to the dock

    c. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode

    d. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds

    e. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button

Once that's done, open up iTunes. It will immediately recognize a device in restore mode, and prompt you accordingly. Note: If you wish to use a firmware other than the default installed by itunes, you must depress the SHIFT key while clicking on the 'Restore' button in iTunes. This will allow you to choose your desired Firmware (.ipsw) file.

Itunes will restore your device to it's factory, out of the box condition. Note: If prompted, DO NOT RESTORE AS A BACKUP OF YOUR DEVICE. This has caused issues in the past. For some, it's the only way to restore contacts, etc; if you feel you must restore it as a backup, do so at your own risk. At this point, your iPhone should be completely restored.

3.) Minimize iTunes. DO NOT CLOSE IT. iLiberty+ requires itunes to work properly.

4.) Open iLiberty+. (If you don't have it, you may obtain it from theiphoneproject.org

Note: Follow all directions provided to you by iLiberty+. It knows what its talking about.

5.) Before you click on 'Go For It', there's a few things you should know. First, Running iLiberty by default will NOT install the Installer nor Cydia. These packages are critically important if you wish to add third party apps. (You know you want to!) To ensure that these are added, you must perform the following steps precisely.

a.) Click on the 'Advanced' Tab. This tab is located toward the top of the iLiberty+ window.

b.) Click on the 'Available on Repo' Tab. This tab is located toward the bottom of the Advanced tab.

c.) You will see a series of 'payloads'; place a check mark in both 'Installer', and 'OpenSSH'. d.) Click on the 'Download' button. This will download these packages, placing them within the 'Local' tab.

e.) Click on the 'Local' tab. f.) Place a check mark in 'Installer', 'Cydia', and 'OpenSSH'.

g.) Click on the 'Standard' Tab. h.) If you only wish to Jailbreak; place a check in both 'Jailbreak' and 'Cydia'. If you wish to unlock, check these two in addition to the 'Activate' and 'Unlock' checkboxes.

i.) Verify that the above steps have been completed, then click on the Go For It button.

CAUTION: DO NOT DISCONNECT THE IPHONE FROM THE COMPUTER WHILE THIS PROCESS IS RUNNING. If after FOUR HOURS your iphone is still doing nothing, there is a problem. Before this time, you must WAIT PATIENTLY for the entire process to complete.

AGAIN, FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS IMPOSED UPON YOU BY ILIBERTY. It knows what its talking about.

During the process, you will see a status window appear in iLiberty+, advising you of its progress:

Your iPhone will also flash through a series of scrolling text, which is very similar to the following:

Once the entire process is complete, you should be good to go.

Congratulations, you've Jailbroken and/or Unlocked your iPhone!

    What's next?

Its recommended that you run Cydia, tap on the 'Updates' icon, and 'Update All'. It will install several important things on the iPhone that'll make life easier for you in the future. Also, you'll want to download and run BossTools.

    BossTools?

Yes. Bosstools. By default, the iPhone has two primary drive partitions. One is used for the Operating System (OS), while the other is used for Media (your music, videos, etc.) The OS partition on the iPhone is very small, around 300 MegaBytes in size. Firmware version 1.1.4 and its associated files occupy a little more than 220MB of this partition. That leaves around 80MB on which you can install applications. When you run out of space, you'll simply get 'Package Download Failed' or similar error messages, none of which indicate that you have a storage problem.

BossTools rectifies this using a few tactics. First, it moves all applications from the OS partition, into the Media Partition. Next, it creates what's called a Symlink to ensure that future applications are installed on the Media Partition. The result is that you'll have the ability to use the entire device disk to install applications.

Use installer or Cydia to download BossTools. Next, click on the 'Free Disk Space' menu item. After that, tap on the 'Relocate Applications' button. When prompted, tap on 'Go For It'. The process can take as long as an hour or more, so be patient while it does it's thing. (Lack of movement in 5 minutes does not allude to a problem!)

Once BossTools has been run, you have just about everything you need to get the most out of your iPhone.

iLibertyX is the OS X version of iLiberty, an incredible app built to jailbreak, activate, and unlock your iPhone. It works with 1.0.2 and up, and is extremely easy to use!

All right, lets get started. Download iLibertyX (non-member mirror). You must connect your iPhone to iTunes before opening the app. Don't worry if iTunes says its an unsupported iPhone, etc, just let it see the iPhone.

All right, double-click iLibertyX to open it. It will automatically shut down iTunes and iTunes helper when it runs, so you don't need to worry about manually doing that.

Now you're greeted with the iLibertyX screen. Check whichever things you'd like done. Jailbreak prepares your iPhone for modding, and installs Installer.app for you as well. Activate activates your iPhone by bypassing the iTunes activation process, useful if you are unlocking your iPhone or don't want to use the iPhone as a phone/SMS device. If you have AT&T you don't need to do this since you can activate through iTunes just fine. Unlock lets you use the iPhone with GSM carriers other than AT&T.

Now click the Payloads tab in iLibertyX, and choose your extras. BBinfo installs an app to your iPhone which lets you see which bootloader, IMEI, SIM # and more your iPhone is using. SSH lets you access your iPhone's filesystem remotely. For each one you want, click Download by it. It will then download, and go from being grayed out to being available.

    Image:Ilibertyx5.png

Check the payloads you'd like, and then click Free my 8GB iPhone! NOTE: If you have a different iPhone (4GB or 16GB) it will note that instead.

    Image:Ilibertyx6.png

iLibertyX will then run through a bunch of status reports.

    Image:Ilibertyx7.png

At this prompt, you will see a bunch of text scrolling on the iPhone itself. This is normal. Give it a minute or so.

    Image:Ilibertyx8.png

    Image:Ilibertyx9.png

Still waiting... different screen on the iPhone, which has just rebooted...

    Image:Ilibertyx10.png

Assuming all went well, which it should have, you will now get the Enjoy! message, click OK, and the Free my 8GB iPhone button will now say Success!

That's it - you're done! Huge props to the guys for making this, including the iPhone Dev Team, pepjin, aviegas, francis, geohot, and more.
