iSlsk is, in the developer’s words, is “a P2P Soulseek client that lets you download music and listen to it on your Music Player”. In other words, it enables you to download music to your iPhone or iPod Touch, and once it is done downloading, import it to your iPod and listen to it there. The application is very well developed with very few bugs, and even can run and download music in the background without being open. Now we will take a look at the functions and features of iSlsk.

When the app is first opened you get a login screen where, if this is your first time, you enter your login information, and your account is created automatically. This screen is also how you reach the settings and may touch a button to donate if you want to. Let’s look at the settings. On the Settings screen, you have the option to auto-connect, set your maximum connections, maximum search results, maximum results queue, and the iTunes ReSync option. This option recovers the downloaded music that is lost when you sync with iTunes. It does this by re-importing the music saved in /var/mobile/Media/Downloads/Imported/ back to your iPod. However, if the Manually Manage Music option is checked in iTunes, you will not need to use the ReSync option.

Next, we’ll examine the search feature. This is very simple. First, touch the File Search icon at the bottom. Here we’re greeted with a search bar. Tap that to begin typing, and press Search when you are finished. Once it begins searching, results will begin to appear. Tap a result to see other details, such as size, length, and bitrate. Once you find the song you want to download, touch the Download button in the top right, and tap Download File. It will then return you to the results of your search. You can now download more songs, or check on songs currently downloading.

To do this, tap the Transfers icon on the bottom. Here you will see all of the songs that are downloading at the moment. You can see the completion percentage, as well as the name of the file, and how fast it’s downloading. You may also touch the red circle with the “X” to cancel a download. Once it reaches 100%, the item will turn green, and you will see “Finished” instead of “Downloading”. This is where we actually get to import our newly downloaded music to our iPod.

Tap the Downloads icon at the bottom. You will now see all of the finished downloads. To import an item, tap the song, and click Import This File Only. You will get a status message at the bottom telling you that music is being imported. Once it is finished importing, you will be returned to the Downloads screen showing your downloaded files. Now, let’s go to our iPod to see if the music was imported successfully. Click the home button and go to your iPod. Now look for the file you imported. Also, iSlsk imports it with the correct title, artist, and album. Sometimes, this gets mixed up, but it’s almost always worked successfully for me.

iSlsk also has room for improvement though. For example, it would be great if you could listen to the downloaded songs before importing them, because it may or may not be the correct song. Also, there is not currently an easy way to delete imported music, in the case that the song you downloaded wasn’t what you thought it was. There is a way to do this, but it’s mildy tedious. First, navigate to /var/mobile/Media/Downloads/Imported, and delete the incorrect song you downloaded. Now sync with iTunes. After they sync is finished, open iSlsk and touch Settings on the main screen, and tap iTunes ReSync.

All in all, iSlsk is a very well developed application that is very easy to use, and works great, even while downloading in the background. iSlsk is available through the Big Boss source (http://thebigboss.org/repo.xml). Also, contact the developer, Errrick, at errrick@gmail.com, and his site is http://www.errrick.com.ar

His site is where you can find information about upcoming apps or changelogs for updated apps. Be sure to donate if you find this app useful to reward Errrick for all his hard work.
