Getting Started iPhone Modding OS X current

    From ModMyiFone - Wiki

This guide will detail how to get started modding your iPhone in OS X. As of 1.16.08, the current iPhone firmware is 1.1.3.

This guide is ONLY for folks who bought an iPhone with firmware 1.1.2 on it out of the box, or users who have upgraded from a previous version but DO NOT WANT THEIR IPHONE UNLOCKED. For users who UPGRADED to 1.1.2, see this guide for unlock and getting started instructions.

This guide will essentially teach you to jailbreak your 1.1.2 iPhone. "Jailbreaking" is the term we use for preparing your iPhone so that you can access the filesystem on the iPhone. Without this, you cannot "mod" or "hack" your iPhone. This includes unlocking, installing applications, and general hacks/mods/tweaks.

    All right, lets get started.

    Jailbreaking your 1.1.2 iPhone.

In order to jailbreak the 1.1.2 firmware of the iPhone, we will be downgrading to the 1.1.1 firmware, jailbreaking 1.1.1, installing a small application, upgrading BACK to 1.1.2, and then jailbreaking 1.1.2. This whole procedure will take you roughly an hour. 90 minutes if you get scared and nervous. :D

    Files you will need:

iPhone 1.1.1 firmware file - (don't download with Safari, as it will automatically uncompress it for you. I recommend using Firefox to preserve the .ipsw extension)
iPhone 1.1.2 firmware file - (don't need to download, iTunes will do so automatically for you. Link is here though, if you need a manual download)
    iNdependence 1.3beta2
    1.1.2 jailbreak software

I recommend you put all that in a single folder on your desktop so you can find it easy. Assuming you've downloaded all that, lets jailbreak your 1.1.2 iPhone.

    Step 1. Downgrade to 1.1.1.

Connect the iPhone to your Mac.

If you have added info to the iPhone already (contacts, music, calendars, etc), you should sync now in iTunes to save your personal info. Make sure to import any photos you have taken as well in iPhoto, as this process will delete all your personal info from the iPhone. Assuming you sync now, you should be able to get your info back on the iPhone. Note: any SMS and voicemail will most likely be deleted.

With iTunes open and the iPhone connected, hold down the Sleep and Home buttons on the iPhone for roughly 15-20 seconds, until it displays a picture of the iTunes icon and a cable plugging into it. iTunes will now detect the iPhone in recovery mode and display the following message:

Press OK. Now, hold down the option button, and click Restore.

iTunes will ask you which firmware file you would like to Restore with. Choose the 1.1.1 firmware we downloaded earlier. It should be called iPhone1,1_1.1.1_3A109a_Restore.ipsw. Hit Open.

iTunes will now Restore your iPhone to the 1.1.1 firmware. This will take around 6 minutes. During this time you will see the following status messages:

All right. Now iTunes will complete the Restore. You will get an unknown error and iTunes will say the iPhone could not be restored. Don't worry, that's ok, it actually did work.

Press OK. iTunes will again tell you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Hit OK again, eject the iPhone in iTunes, and quit iTunes.

Good, now we're on 1.1.1 firmware, but we're stuck in recovery mode. To get out of that, we're going to open iNdependence 1.3beta2, which we downloaded earlier.

NOTE: If you are running iTunes 7.5, first run the iNDependence MobDev Tool (included in the iNdependence download),

which will ask you where the MobileDevice framework that comes with 7.4.2 is installed. You can find it here or here for MMi members.

Hit OK, then tell it where the framework is and where you have iNdependence at.

Great. Now you'll see the iNdependence screen. The bottom should say 'Disconnected: waiting for iPhone...

Let is sit there a second, and it will kick your iPhone out of restore mode. The Status will change to show its now connected to an iPhone running 1.1.1, not activated, and jailed. Good.

Now your iPhone is running 1.1.1, jailed and unactivated. Lets move on to page 2 of this guide, which will show you how to jailbreak 1.1.1.
