There is no advantage for T-Mobile users to buy this phone. The 3G Network from T-Mobile USA is not compatible. If you want 3G change carriers. Otherwise just upgrade to OS 2.0 when released.
The contract extension is 2yrs from the day you sing the new agreement, not two years more from the end of your current contract.

WOW - Another voice of reason. /\
Common sense people - Use it - You were smart enough to buy an iphone.
Try thinking how dumb it would be for Apple to try to force buyers into contracts.
Apple would loose major sales from their stores.

Can't you buy one for 199 then
cancel the 2yr subscription for 175?
199+175=$374

Whatever Apple would lose from forcing a contract is instantly regained by the amount of units a $200 price tag will sell.

You'd have to return the phone or pay the remainder of the full price for this.

Check this, they can stop itunes activation, they can make activation of service only done in-store (yeah right) but they cannot make you purchase a contract nor activation with purchase of the phone. Plain and simple.
Hardware = yours
Service = theirs

They can, they will, and you'll hate it or love it.
I really don't know how else to say it without bringing bright colored letters. Apple subsidized the phone to AT&T. Meaning they got a LOT (like so much you can swim in it) of money. I mean, think of it number then add a couple of 0's. That much. This is why Apple is not getting any money from the contracts, they already got it by subsidizing. It's now AT&T's baby. And they say you can only buy it with a contract. Apple could care less about how AT&T sells it, they already got a bulk of however many units they sold AT&T. They're not selling them online because you can't set up a contract online. They won't just sell them on the Apple Store without a contract.

Thats why the phone is 199/299 its SUBSIDIZED by att. When you go into a ATT store and you see the cheaper "contract" price you are getting the phone cheaper because they are subsidizing it they pay the manufacturer (Apple) the FULL PRICE for the phone.
You get the cheaper price because they now can force you into a contract.
Trust me the iphone costs more than 199/299 in R&D and manufacturing costs, apple isnt selling them at a LOSS.
Someone else who knows simple economics, finally!

i am the one to agree with happy. apple and att cant do what they want they have lowered the price enough that they can lure in enough people to switch to ATT. Apple and ATT have 2 goals 1 is to get you to buy an iphone the other goal is to get you to go with att, they really could care less about other people wanting to use them on other networks. And like i stated earlier they may gain quite a few sales with the new lower price and all but they will also lose alot of sales from the people who dont use att. ATT is trying to become a monopoly honestly.
They cannot make you sign a contract but all this means is you will not be getting a iphone through att or apple, plain and simple.

From the AT&T Press Release: " With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299."

Bluetooth?
Anyone know if the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR posted on Apple's site hints that this might be Stereo? or are we still stuck with a mono channel?
